Dean Harvey (Spellman Dublin Port) has won the men’s race at ‘Round 2’ of the Ulster Cyclocross Series, hosted by Omagh Wheelers in Fintona. Harvey claimed victory in what was a close contest at the front between himself and Darnell Moore (Caldwell Cycles) with Darragh McCarter making it a 1-3 for Spellman Dublin Port.
Harvey got the best start and on the opening lap of six he pulled clear of Moore and McCarter. However, Moore was then quicker over the next two laps and at the halfway point of the race there was nothing to separate them.
At that point Harvey dug in and nudged ahead a little on the fourth lap before Moore came back at him on the penultimate lap. However, Harvey proved strong on what was a fiercely competitive final lap, when the pace was upped at the front of the race.
Harvey eventually won by 15 seconds – thanks to his last lap ride – from Moore with McCarter taking 3rd two minutes down on Harvey. Junior rider Curtis Neill (Carn Wheelers) was 4th with Jamie Meehan (Spellman Dublin Port) in 5th.
Barry Convery (Newry Wheelers CC) was first unplaced M40, Des Woods (Newry Wheelers CC) was first unplaced M50 and Christopher McCann (Banbridge CC) was first unplaced M60.
In the women’s race, there was some drama at the front as Caroline Martinez (Chainreaction Cycles) took victory. Eleana Wallace (Harps CC) rode very strongly out front over the first three laps of the four-lap race and had built up a healthy advantage over the chasing Martinez as the final lap approached.
However, as Wallace should have been completing her third lap to go out onto her fourth and final lap there was some miscommunication at the start-finish line, which meant Wallace did not immediately go out onto her final lap. Martinez., however, was on the ball and she continued to race away, going into the lead and holding off a chase by Wallace to win.
In the end Martinez – a seasoned campaigner on the scene who was a due a big win – took the victory by just five seconds from Wallace. Roisin Skeffington (Square Wheels) took third place just over 2½ minutes back. Rachel McBride (Arcane Cycling Team) was 4th with with Michelle Irvine (Unattached) 5th and first unplaced Masters rider.
