Harvey (18) lays down marker with first A1 win of new campaign in Banbridge

Dean Harvey
has continued his bullet-like transition into the U23 ranks with victory in the
Annaclone GP in Co Down today. The Spellman Dublin Port rider was out on his
own at the end of the contest, in what was his first road race since moving out
of the junior ranks.

Today’s win
follows a very productive cyclocross campaign for the 18-year-old, during which
he moved into the U23 ranks for the first time and scored several big wins. He
was also selected to ride the U23 race at the World Cyclocross Championships in
the US in January.

Harvey took
the victory today from Darnell Moore (Caldwell Cycles) and the emerging  Odhran Doogan (Caldwell Cycles).

Luke Smith (Moynalty CC) placed 4th, with Gareth O’Neill
(Caldwell Cycles) in 5th and  Paul Antoine Hagan of host club Banbridge CC rounding out the
top six in the main event, which was handicapped and for A1-A2-A3 riders.

While
Harvey came away with the win, he found himself on the back foot today as
several groups took off from the scratch group in a bid to get to the front of
the race. However, Harvey got back on terms and made his way to the front by
closing a gap of about one minute on his own with about two laps remaining.

When
he made the juncture on the penultimate lap he went on the front in a
breakaway, which proved one of the decisive moves of the races. Harvey then
took the initiative again on a climb with about 6km remaining; attacking hard
and getting a gap.

He
then drilled it to the finish alone to take the victory, with Moore also
finishing on his own in 2nd place and his team mate Doogan winning the sprint
for 3rd from the remains of the breakaway just seconds later.

In the
A4-Women’s race, Mark Hunter (Errigal Cycling Club) won from Noel Doyle (TVR) and Mark Currie (Harps CC).
Leading woman, Erin Grace Creighton (McConvey
Cycles), was 6th
competing against the men.
