Harkness and Lally fly flag for Ireland in U23 European Championships

Shirin van Anrooij of the Netherlands claims the U23 women's title in front of a home crowd

Darcy Harkness and Roisin Lally flew the flag for Ireland today in the U23 women's race at the European Cyclocross Championships in the Netherlands.

Both Irish riders were making their debut in the U23 cyclocross ranks at this level and when the Dutch riders dominated on the front today it proved a very difficult outing for most of the field.

Shirin van Anrooij, the junior European TT champion two years ago, put in a great ride from the front to take the U23 title. She led home a Dutch 1-2-3 in Drenthe.

Van Anrooij had 13 seconds to spare on team mate Puck Pieterse on the Col du Vam finish, with Fem van Empel taking the bronze at 1:06 at the end of six laps, and 44 minutes, of racing.

Ireland's Lally finished in 31st place at three laps while Harkness placed 28th at two laps.
