Greg Swinand has enjoyed a dynamite season so far this year since switching to UCD CC. In Blarney today he has again shown his class by winning the Veterans' National Time Trial Championships; retaining the title he won in Omagh 12 months ago.

Greg Swinand has put in a storming ride to win the National Vets’ Time-Trial Championships for the second year in succession; completely demolishing the opposition in Cork this afternoon.
The UCD CC man, who has won a host of big road races already this year, clocked a time of 52:45.
It was over two minutes faster than runner-up John Madden (Dig Deep Coaching), who clocked 54.47. Last year’s runner up John Heverin (Clann Eireann) recorded a time of 55.09, which secured for him the bronze medal.
It was a long journey from Wicklow to Blarney for Swinand for a 40km contest held in dry but blustery conditions, though the big man made light of the weather on the out and back course.
The outward 20 kilometres was on an almost constantly rising drag and into a headwind, while the return journey saw riders regularly hit speeds of 40 miles an hour.
Swinand beat off Madden and Heverin’s brave bids for glory, no mean achievement considering both are among the best testers in the country.
Last year Heverin held the national 50 mile time trial record for a period and Madden has this year broken the Derry to Belfast record.
Swinand will now turn his attention to the rescheduled vets’ road race in Mullingar on September 20th.
We will have today’s times and results in full for you as soon as we get them.
Two excellent events put on by Osbourne Meats-The Edge Sports ran off very safely this morning and produced two great champions in the shape of Swinand in the vets’ race and Mark Downey in the junior event.
Unfortunately the junior women’s time trial set for today and road race down for decision tomorrow, Sunday, were called off because insufficient numbers entered.
However, the junior men’s road race and separate A3 title decider goes ahead as scheduled tomorrow.
