Having been dominant at times on the road and frequently led the way in the cyclocross discipline, Grace Young has this evening been crowned elite Irish champion at the National Criterium Championships in Co Galway.
The Strata 3-VeloRevolution rider was made to work all the way; getting clear in a very strong three-rider move and prevailing from it on Pallas Karting Track.
Young, who was out of the medals in the title race at the same venue last year, made no mistake this time around.
She came to the finish with former national road race champion, and her team mate, Eve McCrystal along with rising star of road and track Lara Gillespie of UCD Cycling Club.
Young led around the final corner and by the time she rounded it she already had a few lengths on Gillespie, with McCrystal just behind.
And when that trio straightened up after the right-hander for the final dash to the line, Gillespie gained on Young a little but the leader was out front and nothing was going to stop her.
She sprinted over the line and punched the air in delight: Gillespie just behind in the silver medal position and McCrystal taking the bronze.
More to come.
