George Peden has won the latest round of the Donegal Bay Cycling Club TT Series, breaking the 50-minute marker for the 25 mile distance.
In less than ideal conditions for racing, and with just two 10 mile TTs in his legs by way of competition over the last few months, Peden recorded a time of 49:33.
In the process of winning the event he beat Marcus Christie into 2nd place; the former national elite champion who has represented Ireland at the Worlds and Northern Ireland at the Commonwealth Games.
Christie is one of the best TT riders Ireland has produced in recent decades and Peden's victory over him was a significant scalp for the 20-year-old college student.
Peden put 59 seconds into Christie on the night; a very significant winning margin over a rider of such quality.
It was Peden's first 25 mile TT race, though he rode one test of just over that distance last year and clocked 57:50.
Peden is normally based in Leeds where he is going to university and has been riding for Prologue RT in Harrogate. However, because of Covid19 he has been at home in Ballymoney in recent months.
Before last night he had already won both 10 mile TTs he rode in Donegal over the last couple of weeks as club competitions have been run to prepare riders for the return to open racing from this weekend.
Completing the podium last night was Darragh McCarter, the local Donegal man now riding for Spellman Dublin Port. He recorded a time of 54.43.
