Caroline Ryan made a brave bid for bronze in Mexico but was overhauled on the last lap of the scratch race
Having ridden well early in the day to take victory in the heat of the scratch race, Caroline Ryan’s brave bid for her second UCI World Cup medal in as many months did not quite come off last night.
With two riders having attacked the field and gained a lap, thus wrapping up the gold and silver medals in the Mexico meeting, the Irish rider attacked hard five laps from the finish in a bid to snatch bronze.
However, she was overhauled on the last lap and faded due to her effort before coming home in 16th place.
Cycling Ireland head coach, Brian Nugent said Ryan’s form seems good just weeks out from the World Track Championships in Cali, Colombia.
“Caroline was very active in the final, and made a great attack with 5 laps to go, only getting caught with 125 metres to go,” Nugent said.
“We’re very pleased with her form ahead of the World Champs.”
The gold was won by Hong Kong rider Xiao Juan Diao, with local rider Jannie Salcedo taking silver and Russian Evgeniya Romanyuta coming out on top in the fight for bronze.
The outing was Ryan’s only race of the Guadalajara meeting, the last of this track season’s UCI World Cups. She now turns her attention to the World Championships, which she will ride both the pursuit and the points race.
Ryan took a bronze medal in the points race from the Worlds in Melbourne two years ago, and having won her first ever medal at a World Cup in Mexico last month - a bronze in the pursuit - she will be looking to take something home from the upcoming worlds.
