Alan Galavan (Slaney CC) has held onto the race leader’s yellow jersey by the skin of his teeth after a fabulous third stage of the Corkman Three-Day in Kanturk today, Sunday.
The stage was won by Matt Slattery (Killarney CC) after he and two others – Marc Flavin (Dungarvan CC) and Michael O’Mahony (Blarney CC) - broke away on the second last of five laps on the pan-flat course in Banteer.
The trio built up an advantage that stretched to over 30 seconds at one stage and it looked like Galavan's race was run; with Slattery apparently well positioned to take custody of the yellow jersey after a solid time-trial this morning.
But a frantic chase on the final lap led by upwards of seven teams was always going to have the legs of the three breakaway men up front - but they were proving difficult to reel in.

With 10km to go the gap had been trimmed to just 10 seconds and by the 5km to go mark that was even more slender. But the last few kilometres saw a little bit of cat and mouse set in, with the aforementioned chasing teams believing their work was done.
But the three men out front persisted and took advantage of some hesitancy to hang on. Slattery, who won the best A2 rider in Rás Mumhan at Easter, was a deserved stage winner, with Flahavan in second and O'Mahony in third,
The bunch galloped in just as the first three crossed the line and only conceded two seconds.

It's all to play for tomorrow, with almost 20 riders less than half a minute off the yellow jersey.
Galavan's still in yellow this evening but with a 90km stage to negotiate, punctuated by some steep climbs, it's anyone's race.
