Junior rider Declan Mulholland has taken another win, this time against the elite riders at the PJ Logan Memorial in Coalisland, Co Tyrone.
The manner of his victory underlines the standard in the junior ranks this year, with some of those riders who have only departed youth racing taking today’s contest by the scruff of the neck very early.
Mulholland was part of the A3 and junior group given a three minute advantage over the A1 and A2 riders.
There were attacks from both groups before they merged, with junior Aaron Swan of the NRPT-Magnet.ie team aggressive off the front of the limit men and Mike Millar of Phoenix CC attacking the A1-A2 group to try and get up to those ahead.
The first really threatening move from the merged group came when Jake Gray of the NRPT-Magnet.ie – who had won the A3-Junior race at the CicliSport GP yesterday – went clear with Darnell Moore; the Caldwell Cycles-Omagh rider who was victorious in the Carn Classic last weekend.
They battled on towards the finish as a number of chasers formed off the front of the bunch.
These included, among others, Mulholland (Derrymore CC), Jonny Taylor (Carn Wheelers) and Mark Downey (Banbridge CC).
Mulholland managed to make his way back to the head of the race and took the victory ahead of Gray as Moore dropped back.
Gray’s team mate Adam Stenson was 3rd besting Ronan McLaughlin of Foyle CC to round out the podium.
Then came Downey, Millar, Taylor (Carn Wheelers), Conor McCann (NRPT-Magnet.ie), Moore and Marc Heaney (Carn Wheelers).
The A4 race came down to a bunch sprint won by Kenny Bagnell (Newry Wheelers), from Sean Mullan (Clogher Valley) and Neill Ryan (De Ronde Van Cork CC).
