On-fire Forristal rips it up again at Gorey, Hughes takes yellow

Paul Forristal second stage win at Gorey Three Day

For the second day in a row Orwell Wheeler Paul Forristal claimed a stage win at the Gorey Three. And like yesterday’s victory, his latest win came from a breakaway.

The racing today took the riders 85km from Gorey back to Blessington where they had started out on Saturday morning.

Dylan Hughes of Spokes Racing Team was firmly in the yellow jersey having won the opening road stage and Sunday morning’s short TT in Gorey.

At the start today he had 41 seconds on had on team mate Ben Barlow. Lucan CRC’s Cian May was next, some 1:29 off the yellow jersey.

Declan Maloney was 4th; the Sports Room Racing ride with 2:10 to make up if he was going to win the race. And just two seconds behind him came yesterday’s stage 3 winner Forristal.

As is always the case at the Gorey Three Day, there was plenty of aggression from the gun today. While a number of early breakaway efforts came to nothing, that changed the field raced towards Tullow.

A six-man move would form and it would never be recaptured. Eventual stage winner Forristal was present along with team mate Callum O’Toole.

Also in the move were Nathan Keown (North Down CC), Scott Howieson (Spokes Racing Team), Cian Kehoe (Sports Room Racing) and Kevin McCambridge (Mellow Velo).

The gap went out to 1:30; gradually increasing until the chase was put on in the peloton by the race leader’s team.

The bunch would close right up on the leaders but never catch them. Forristal had a few digs coming in the road and at the death he held off Barlow, who got across to the breakaway late on, to take victory on the day.

That result meant Barlow close up a little on Hughes, though it wasn’t enough to dislodge the race leader.

Hughes ran out the overall victor from Barlow, May and then the flying Forristal.

The yellow jersey winner also claimed the climbers’ classification, Barlow won the points and Spokes Racing was best team.
