Josie Knight, who previously represented Ireland, has won the elite individual pursuit track title at the British National Track Championships.
She showed her progress late last year on the road in
Ireland with a brilliant run at Rás na mBan; winning the opening three stages
riding for Team GB.
Knight, whose brother Tom Knight was also a junior Irish
international, switched her allegiance to Britain about two years ago.
She grew up in Kerry but her parents are from Britain
meaning she was eligible to ride for either Ireland or Great Britain.
Knight was fastest in the qualifying round in the 3km
pursuit at the championships in Manchester with a time of 3:32.771.
She met Anna Morris in the final but always looked to be in charge and finished her effort with her first individual elite British title. Megan Barker won bronze after seeing off Jos Lowden.
Knight said she was delighted to take gold, adding she
felt she had come a long way in even the past 12 months.
“I really wanted this. This time last year I wasn’t on
the Great Britain Cycling Team programme,” she said.
“But I was here, trying to record a time to get me on the
programme, and I just managed to do that. So to come back and win this year is
really special.
“Katie (Archibald – pursuit champion the last three years)
is an incredible athlete, who I really look up to, so to be able to take the
jersey on for the next year is really special.”
After winning the individual pursuit Knight also won the
team pursuit at the championships with her Team Breeze team mates.
