Dubliner Philip Lavery has continued his very good run of early season form by taking victory in the Tour du Charolais in France today, Saturday.

The former Node4-Giordana man, now riding for AC Bisontine, emerged fastest of a three-man breakaway at the end of 156km in the French national elite race. It was Lavery’s first win of the year after securing a number of top 10 results since arriving in France a couple of months ago

Lavery had been scheduled to ride the P&O Ferries Tour of the North last weekend but that was cancelled after heavy snowfall made parts of the route impassable. However, that disruption to his programme and a recent bout of illness have certainly not harmed his form.

Having ridden with Node4 last year and An Post the year before, Lavery has made the move to France this season to his new team there in the hope of securing the results needed to win a place in a pro team. And on the basis of his results thus far he appears to have settled in well. The An Post Rás next month will be a big week for him in trying to build his CV.

Before today’s win, he had gone very close to victory in France the weekend before last, taking second in the Annemasse-Bellegarde national elite race from a field of 150 riders.
