The Irish track team are on their travels again, this time to Indonesia, as part of their efforts to qualify for the Paris Olympics in 18 months time.
Having faced a tough test at the Europeans in Switzerland the week before last, a five-rider team has been selected for the first UCI Tissot Track Nations Cup meeting of the year, in Jakarta.
The team pursuit quartet - Kelly Murphy, Alice Sharpe, Mia Griffin and Lara Gillespie - lowered their own national record on the way to 5th at the Europeans in Grenchen. They will be in action again, at the Jakarta International Velodrome, on Thursday.
Griffin, now a World Tour rider with Israel Premier Tech Roland, will also ride the omnium and elimination race, as well as her team pursuit duties. Sharpe, competing for Israel Premier Tech Roland Development on the road this year, and UAE Development Team new signing, Gillespie, will team up in the women’s madison.
Sprinter Orla Walsh has also been picked on the team and will compete in both the sprint and keirin events next week.
The women’s team pursuit riders will be first into action as they face the qualifying round on Thursday. The following day, the team pursuit first round and finals take place as well as the women’s elimination race.
