First-year junior Loos wins Cotter Cup Two-Day with late raid

Joshua Loos (Seven Springs CC) has been cutting his teeth on the road, and in MTB racing, as a youth rider in recent seasons and now, having stepped up to the junior ranks, he has taken his first big win competing against the seniors.

The teenager has emerged from the Cotter Cup Two Day - three stages over two days - with overall victory after going on a final stage raid to win big on the day.

He was best at the end of Sunday's 80km road stage, winning solo by just over one minute in the C3 race promoted by West Clare Cycling Club.

Loos (17) tried to get clear early in the stage but was marked. However, with about 15km to go he bridged across to two attackers and then dropped them, spending the final 10km of the stage solo.

And that impressive result was also enough to see him claw back the time he needed, and some, to leapfrog the general classification and into the final yellow jersey.

Loos, guesting for Tuam CC this weekend, won the stage by 1:02 from Kieran Moloney (Club Rothaiochta Na Sionainne), with Garry Carroll (Newcastle West Cycling Club) on his wheel in 3rd place.

Then came a gap of seven seconds to stage 1 winner Tony Pryce (DB Cycling Club), who effectively led in a 16-rider group. However, the chasers crossed the line covered by a gap of 11 seconds from the front to the rear of the group.

The 16 riders sprinting for 4th included Dylan Kennedy (Fermoy CC), the yellow jersey after his 2nd place in the stage 2 TT of 7km on Saturday afternoon.

However, Loos had started the final stage in 3rd place overall, just eight seconds off both race leader Kennedy and 2nd placed overall Pryce.

Loos’s winning margin on Sunday saw him comfortably jump to the top of the final general classification; the gap he opened very decisively displacing his rivals.

He claimed the final yellow jersey by 1:01 from Pryce, with Kennedy in 3rd at 1:05. Dara Ryan (Limerick CC) was 4th at 1:16 with Chris Kendellen (Blarney CC) 5th at 1:22 and James Crowley (Bandon CC) 6th at 1:30.
