Cyclocross organisers confirm full series, clash with road season likely

The Munster Cyclocross League is always hard fought and very well organised. The promoters have wasted no time in making it clear they are planning for a full 2020-2021 series despite the devastation caused to cycling by the Covid19 pandemic. With Cycling Ireland having announced group training and club racing can commence any time from Monday, June 29th, and open races set to resume from July 17th, the first group of cyclocross organisers has now committed to a full series of racing this winter.

The Munster Cuclocross League promoters are planning a full series of races through the final months of 2020 and into 2021; a very welcome development considering just weeks ago there were concerns for cyclocross this year.

However, while the Covid19 pandemic resulted in racing being suspended from mid March, road racing is now coming back much sooner than expected and that puts the cyclocross season on a much stronger footing.

Racing and group activities in all disciplines are dependent on the Covid19 infection remaining under control in the Republic, but the Munster Cyclocross League's announcement now that it is planning for a full series is a confidence booster for the booming cyclocross scene.

The Munster Cyclocross League begins with the St Finbarr's fixture on October 4th and the final race, in Carrick-on-Suir, is down to be contested on January 10th.

The dates are provisional but as they stand it means the series is likely to clash with the extended road season. Road races will continue until deep into October if enough clubs can be found to run extra events.

A revised road racing calender is expected to be released in coming days and the extent of any clash between the road season and cyclocross will become clear at that point.
