Fiona Mangan (Team Cynisca) has taken one of the best results of her on a fantastic day out for her team at Clasica de Almeria (1.1) in Spain.
The 102km race in Puebla de Vícar was a challenging one, with three climbs in quick succession - Alto de Rio Chico, Alto de San Roque and Alto Aljibe de la Cruz - before the field headed back the coastal route to Puebla de Vícar for the big finish.
Mangan's team mate, Lauren Stephens, got up the road with Ukrainian rider Yuliia Biriukova of Human Powered Health, taking the pressure off the Irishwoman, who made the small chasing group.
At the finish, Stephens won the two-up gallop that decided the race, with Biriukova 2nd. Linda Zanetti made it a 1-3 for Human Powered Health when she claimed the sprint for 3rd place, just nine seconds behind the two leaders.
Mangan finished in that eight-rider group and placed 8th in the race; a great result in just her second competitive outing of the year. She did well to make the chasing group as the field split to pieces, with small gaps between the numerous groups.
Mangan, who rode the women's Vuelta with Spanish squad Soltec Team last year, switched to Team Cynisca, a US-registered Continental team, last July and has remained with them for the 2024 campaign.
