Filippo Ganna closes in on iconic cycling marker after outstanding rides

Filippo Ganna has broken the individual pursuit world record twice in one day

Filippo Ganna is now very close to becoming the first cyclist in history to break four minutes for the men's individual pursuit after breaking the world record twice in one day today.

At the World Cup in Minsk on Sunday,
Ganna did 4:04.252 in the 4km event, breaking the record Ashton Lambie set last
year.

The American set a new record of 4:05.423
at altitude in Bolivia last September.

Not content with set the new marker in
qualifying today, Ganna went even faster in the gold medal ride off against
John Archibald (Team GB), with 4:02.647.

The individual pursuit is no longer an
Olympic event and the world record has been broken very few times in the last
couple of decades.

In 1996 Chris Boardman smashed the
record of Andrea Collinelli (Italy); lowering his record by more than nine
seconds to 4:11.114. Like Ganna today, Boardman broke the record twice.

That marker stood until Jack Bobridge
(Australia) lowered it to 4:10.534 in February, 2011.

Last August and September Lambie broke
the record three times, at altitude in Bolivia and Mexico; bringing it down to 4:05.423
before Ganna’s rides today.

The Italian, aged 23 years and riding
for Team Ineos on the road, will now have his eye firmly fixed on breaking the
iconic four-minute marker for the event.

He is also part of Italy’s team pursuit line-up that plans to launch an assault in Olympic gold next year.
