Junior riders Oisin Ferrity (Island Wheelers) and Lucy Brown (Phoenix CC) led the way today in the elite races during 'Round 3' of the Ulster Cyclocross Series at Florida Manor, Killinchy, Co Down.

On the very tough day for racing, in wet and muddy conditions, the fields were slightly smaller than normal, though that was no concern of the front runners as they pressed on fighting it out for victory in the men events.

Ferrity, who won the Irish junior road race crown in Kanturk, Co Cork, this year emerged victorious, after 50 minutes of racing, from Masters national cyclocross champion Alan Bingham; the Newry Wheelers rider 51 second behind the 16-year-old winner.

Graham Boyd of McConvey Cycles rounded out the podium on the day, some 1:18 down on the winner, while veterans Des Woods (Newry Whelers) and Jason Henry (Inspired Cycling) with 4th and 5th at 2:46 and 2:59 respectively.

In the women's race, Brown got off to a flying start and had built a decisive gap by the end of the opening lap of four. And while eventual runner-up Elena Wallace (Harps CC) closed up on the junior Brown a little on the penultimate lap, the race leader was safe at that point barring major incident.

However, Brown dug on the final lap of the circuit to re-established some of the time she gave back to Wallace on the third lap and was fastest again of the field on that final loop, as she hap been on laps one and two.

In the end Brown, who has just stepped up from the U16 ranks on the road this year, ran out the winner from Wallace by 1:15. Martina Hawkins (Dromara CC) took the final step on the podium, at 4:07.

Caroline Martinez (Chain Reaction Cycles), the winner in Fintona two weeks ago, placed 4th at 6:57 while Zoe Lindsay (TC Racing) w was 5th at 7:48 and Carly Connolly (Square Wheelers) placed 6th at 11:11.
