Daire Feeley has won the Brian McNamara Memorial race in Tuam, Co. Galway this afternoon, taking victory from the UCD-Fitzcycles.ie pair of Ian Richardson and Eoin Morton.
The iTap rider is in blistering form at the moment and shaking two of the strongest men in the domestic peloton deserves immense credit.
He was in the break that escaped on the first of four 30-kilometre laps and in there to assist with the workload were the aforementioned Morton and Richardson, Jason Prendergast (Cunga CC), Denis Dunworth (Moda Sports/Kingdom Endurance), Dave Walsh (Castlebar CC) as well as Caimin Muldoon and another Aquablue rider.
That group worked very well to pull out a lead of over five minutes on the bunch at one stage but it lost some firepower when first Walsh and Dunworth got dropped and later (after 90 kilometres) Prendergast snapped his chain, leaving five up front.
The remaining five maintained their advantage but disaster struck Muldoon when after taking the KOH and a nice cheque for €50 he punctured and would be absorbed by the bunch.
That left four up ahead and Morton decided to shake things up when he attacked with 20 kilometres to go and held a gap of around 20 seconds for the next 10 kilometres.
When he was caught, Feeley attacked and brought Richardson with him and together they went all the way to the line.
Richardson did try to jump inside two kilometres to go but again Feeley responded, catching him at 500 metres to go and coming around him for the win.
It follows his victory in the Shannonside CC GP yesterday.
