Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) has sent Colombian cycling into a frenzy by winning the national road race championships today, just days after he won the TT crown.
They were Bernal's first wins since his life-threatening crash on a training camp in Colombia three years ago, with fans at the race - and the race commentator, video below - going crazy when it was clear the Tour de France winner was about to become champion.
Spectators who lined the course ran out into the road in the final 1km while the commentary team roared home the 28-year-old as he crossed the line first for the first time in a race since winning stage 16 of the 2021 Giro on the way to overall victory.
Today, Bernal was best in the near seven-hour road race, contested over nine laps of a course in Bucaramanga, with a 2.3km climb, averaging nine per cent, to be contested each lap.
Bernal won solo, with a significant gap of 2:16 over runner-up Diego Camargo (Medellin-EPM), with Kevin Castillo (Team Sistercredito) taking the bronze medal at 3:43 just ahead of Einer Rubio (Movistar Team).
