Sam Welsford (Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe) claimed victory at the Tour Down Under criterium - Villawood Men's Classic - with the aid of Irish lead-out man Ryan Mullen.

However, the end of the race was marred by a crash as the bunch rounded the last bend. A number of riders came down at high speed on the right hander, with several hitting the crowd control barriers.

Thankfully, while some spectators were knocked of their feet, the barriers somehow prevented the riders flying into the crowd, which was a real risk given how hard some of them crashed.

Welsford, who claimed the National Criterium Championships last weekend, won the race from Henri Uhlig (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and British 19-year-old Matthew Brennan (Visma | Lease a Bike); the latter one to watch closely this season.

Having played his part for Welsford in the lead-out, with Danny van Poppel, Mullen finished at 15 seconds in 45th place.
