Video: EvoPro Racing in control after winning New Zealand opener

EvoPro Racing is enjoying a flying start to its tenure in pro cycling, winning again in New Zealand earlier today. And now it has the yellow jersey which is on the shoulders of today's winner Aaron Gate.

Fresh from winning the Gravel and Tar Classic at the weekend, new Irish Continental team EvoPro Racing has taken another win; this time in the New Zealand Cycle Classic (2.2)

Kiwi Aaron Gate did the honours; sprinting in to claim the opening stage after spending the day in the winning breakaway.

Just two men were left standing in that escape after 132km in Cambridge. And because the peloton was just over one minute back, Gate now enjoys a healthy advantage in the general classification on most of the field.

He also holds the points and climbers' classification jerseys. And his Dutch team mate Wouter Wippert sprinted in to take 3rd place on the stage.

That was a repeat of the result in the Gravel and Tar Classic at the weekend when Luke Mudgway and Cyrus Monk took victory and 3rd place respectively.

Gate went clear today with Liam Magennis (Drapac-Cannondale Holistic) and Matt Zenovich (St George Continental). They enjoyed a lead of five minutes at one stage.

When Magennis dropped back, Gate and Zenovich continued to the finish line, where the Evo Pro Racing man got the verdict by two seconds from his breakaway companion.

“It was a tough day out, you definitely can’t beat winning in your first race so I’m happy with that. And now I’ll just have to try and see what the rest of the race holds,” Gate told RoadCycling, adding the team wanted to try and win the race overall.

“Morgan Fox is pretty keen to kick things off to a roaring start,” he added of former Irish road race champion Fox, the manager of EvoPro Racing.

“Luckily we’ve been able to live up to those high expectations that he set all of us. I think everyone’s quite motivated with this team too.

“So everyone’s come into the year in quite good form. And that’s been reflected in the results so we’ll try and keep it going.

“The other half of the team is in Majorca in the coming weeks, racing over there too. So hopefully they can keep the winning ways going as the European season kicks off too.”
