Ryan Mullen 16th in crash-hit BinckBank TT

The form that carried Ryan Mullen to an historic TT bronze medal at the European Road Championships last week has escaped him at the BinckBank Tour.

The Cannondale-Drapac man went into today’s 9km TT in Holland as one of the favourites.

However, he performed below par and ended the stage in 16th place.

The test was won by Stefan Küng; the 23-year-old showing he is a realistic contender for the Swiss cycling throne vacated by Fabian Cancellara.

Küng (BMC Racing) went around the course in Voorburg in a time of 10:58.

He took victory just 4 seconds ahead of Maciej Bodnar (Bora-hansgrohe), with Giro winner Tom Dumoulin (Team Sunweb) in 3rd another second back.

Mullen (23) relinquished 25 seconds to the flying Küng. The Swiss rider rode in wet conditions but escaped the worst of the rain.

Peter Sagan (Bora-hansgrohe) won yesterday's stage 1 in a bunch finish, with all but one of the riders finishing on the same time.

It means the TT result now dictates the general classification. Küng leads by four seconds from Bodnar with five stages remaining.

Mullen was one of the riders to be impacted by the heavens opening on the city centre course. However, for those who started earlier the course was dry.

There were a number of fallers in the wet conditions including Tony Martin (Katusha-Alpecin) and Gijs van Hoecke (LottoNL-Jumbo).
