Eoin Morton has had a very good year and took the Noel Hammond Memorial TT in Co Wicklow today, Saturday
Having emerged as one of the best riders on the home scene in 2013, UCD's Eoin Morton today showed he has maintained his strength right through to the end of the season by taking victory in the Noel Hammond Memorial Time Trial in Co Wicklow.
The Noel and Kieran Hammond memorials are usually run off in road race format, but when problems arose with the road surface for the races in July, Aidan Hammond and Orwell Wheelers rescheduled the races to today, Saturday, and decided to run them as time trials.
On an undulating 32.5km course, the riders faced windy, if clear, conditions. Morton's time of 48.57 was the fastest of the field, but only just.
When the timekeepers consulted their sheets, just 500 one hundredths of a second separated him and A1-A2 race runner-up John Lynch (Murphy Surveys). Donal Walsh (Slaney CC) was second, 1:01 down.
In the A3 race, Morton's UCD team mate Gavin Heberlin was the victor in a time of 51:47. That race saw another very close result, with Odhran O'Coillte (Bray Wheelers) just two seconds down. Gavin Dodd of the promoting club put in a time of 53:44 to take third place on the day.
Paul Doherty (McNally Swords) clocked a time of 56.26 to take the A4 prize.
