Eoghan Cooke of the Irish national junior team has taken
victory on stage 2 of the A3-Junior Newcastle West Stage Race.
The 17-year-old, who won silver in the national road race
championships last year, was best in the sprint from the winning breakaway
today.
While his team mate, and race leader, Dean Harvey was not
in that winning move today, nobody up the road threatened Harvey’s yellow
jersey, which he has retained with just tomorrow’s final stage to come.
At the end of five laps of the 26km circuit in
Knockaderry, Co Limerick, the breakaway had gained almost two minutes on the
remains of the peloton, containing race leader Harvey.

Up there in that move with eventual stage winner, Cooke,
were: Declan O’Carroll (The Chain Gang Cycling Club), Henning Lübberding (Orwell Wheelers Cycling Club), Vladislav Evseev (Orwell
Wheelers Cycling Club), Laurent Dumoulin (O’Leary Stone Kanturk), Barry Meade (O’Leary Stone Kanturk), Brandon Walsh (Comeragh CC), Ben Murphy (Sliabh
Luachra Cycling Club), Michael Gammell Jnr (Greenmount CA) and Derek Joyce (Galway
Bay CC).

However, in the
final charge to the line it was Cooke, underlining his deserved place on the national
team this weekend, who had too much power for his rivals. He won from Meade,
Gammell, Joyce and O’Carroll, in that order.
The bunch was led
home, 1:43 later, by Luke Moynihan of O’Leary Stone Kanturk. Most of the best
placed riders on GC were in that peloton, which numbered just 25 riders at the
end of over three hours of racing.
Ahead of tomorrow’s
finale there is no change at the top of the general standings; Harvey
leading from his Irish junior squad team mate Ruairi Byrne, with 33 seconds
between the two riders.
Orwell’s Andrew Ryan is 3rd at 48 seconds while
Killarney’s San Bolger is in 4th at 58 seconds and Blarney’s Mark O’Donovan in
5th at 1:05.
