Emer Heverin (16) scalps seniors, Graham Boyd also wins in epic conditions

Emer Heverin (All human-VeloRevolution) and Graham Boyd (McConvey Cycles) emerged for victory in the main events in biblical conditions at the Ulster Cyclocross Series in Co Armagh on Sunday.

Heverin was taking that win - in very wet and muddy conditions - in the senior women's race, despite the fact she is a new junior rider, having raced in the U16 ranks on the road this year. She was one of Ireland's representatives at the European Youth Olympics on the road this year.

In the five-lap race at Palace Demesne, Heverin went into an early lead, taking 17 seconds from on the opening lap on eventual 3rd place finisher Elena Wallce (Harps CC).

The early leader was also 23 seconds up on Rachel Newell (McConvey Cycles), who came through to pass Wallace and take 2nd on the day.

While Heverin gained again on her rivals over the next two laps, that slowed to just two seconds over Newell on the penultimate lap. And on the final passage of the circuit, Newell pulled back 18 seconds.

However, that was a case of too little, too late, as young Heverin ran out a very convincing winner, by 49 seconds over Newell, with Wallace 3rd at 1:07.

In the senior men's race, Boyd was challenged in the opening exchanges by Glenn Kinning (Kinning Cycles). Indeed, it was Irish Masters 40 champion, Kinning, who start by far the fastest.

By the time the riders had two laps, of six completed, Kinning had put 16 seconds into Boyd, while Darragh McCarter (Spellman Dublin Port) wasn't right behind Boyd.

However, Kinning's pace dropped off a little through the rest of the race, with Boyd more consistent, and eventually catching and passing Kinning on the fourth passage of the circuit.

In the end, Boyd won by 47 seconds from Kinning, with McCarter 3rd, just 15 seconds behind Kinning. There was then a bigger gap, of over three minutes, back to the 4th placed finisher, Barry Kellett (Dromara Cycling Club).
