Ellen McDermott has claimed her second pro win of the season after proving best in the sprint from the breakaway at the end of the GP Lucien Van Impe in Belgium. The Irish rider, and former national criterium champion, had already scored victory this season in the Tour Series in Barking in May.
For her latest win, McDermott - who rides for Team Boompods in the UK and Keukens Redant CT when racing in Europe - made the breakaway in the 98.3km event. And when it came down to a sprint from five or the original breakaway, McDermott was too fast for her rivals.
Belgian rider Alana Castrique (Cofidis) pushed the Irishwoman closet on the line, though McDermott got the verdict in a tight gallop. Marieke Meert (Cyclingteam Balco) was 3rd.
McDermott's team mate, Lensy Debboudt, placed 4th with Naomi de Roeck (Bingoal Casino-Chevalmeire-Van Eyck) rounding out the top five, who all finished on the same time as McDermott.
Allison Mrugal (Amy D Foundation) placed 6th at 30 seconds before Minke Bakker (Bingoal Casino-Chevalmeire-Van Eyck) won the bunch sprint for 7th place some 2:50 down on McDermott. Irish rider Caoimhe O'Brien (Torelli-Cayman Islands-Scimitar) was in the bunch and placed 23rd.
