Ella Doherty is the new Irish junior women's road race champion after she had too much power for her rivals in the title race in Knockaderry, Co Limerick, today.
The Greenmount Cycling Academy rider was best in a sprint to the line from a small group to win the title race in the colours of her Limerick club.
Like Maeve Gallagher, the Castlebar CC rider who won the title last year, Doherty is an accomplished triathlete who has represented Ireland in that sport as well as made national selection as a youth rider in the cycling.
Today Doherty sprinted in at the head of the group from Caoimhe O'Brien, the Weston Homes-Torelli-Assure rider who won three titles at the recent National Junior Track Championships.
Elia Tutty of Dungarvan CC, another young emerging rider on the Irish scene with a background in triathlon, took the bronze medal today at the end of 61.5km of racing in the rain in the Newcastle West Wheelers promoted championships under race director Liam Collins.
