Flying Eddie Dunbar grabs career-best result on Yorkshire climbs

Eddie Dunbar (21) got clear in a 10-man break on the hardest stage in Yorkshire. It contained WorldTour heavyweights but he attacked them several times. Up ahead of them Stephane Rossetto of Cofidis led for 100km on his own and he took the stage.

Irish young gun Eddie Dunbar (21) has taken an excellent 4th place at the Tour de Yorkshire. He has also climbed the general standings to finish the race in 8th.

The Aqua Blue Sport man finished in a quality group today some 34 seconds behind Stephane Rossetto (Cofidis).

Next over the line, and winning the sprint from the 10-man group Dunbar was in, was Olympic champion Greg Van Avermaet (BMC Racing).

Ian Bibby, the British rider competing for JLT-Condor, rounded out the podium on the day; on the same time as Van Avermaet.

Next came Dunbar and then Eduard Prades (Euskadi-Murias). Then came Anthony Perez (Cofidis), Jonathan Hivert (Direct Energie) and Serge Pauwels (Dimension Data).

Rounding out the top 10 was Michael Storer (Team Sunweb), with Pat Bevin (BMC Racing) next; the last man of the group Eddie Dunbar was in.

The race behind that group was shattered to pieces; the six climbs and a stage packed full of aggression ensuring the field split to pieces.

Dunbar attacked several times in the closing kilometres but was shut down each time by BMC Racing; an excellent performance by the young Irish rider.

The stage winner put in an epic ride. He went clear early with Max Stedman (Canyon Eisberg). And though Dunbar’s chase group tried to close him down after he dropped Stedman, Rossetto hung on to win.

The result meant Van Avermaet won the race overall; by nine seconds from Prades. And Pauwels was 3rd overall, some 14 seconds off the winner.

Dunbar finished the race, after four hard stages, in 8th at 27 seconds. That’s his best ever stage race result.
