Eddie Dunbar wins National Junior Time Trial Champs as Greg Swinand takes vets’ title

Greg Swinand of Usher Irish Road Club (above) took the Vets' National Time Trial Championships today in Omagh, as Eddie Dunbar won the junior title.

Eddie Dunbar may be the red hot favourite for tomorrow’s National Junior Road Race Championships in Omagh, but the O’Leary Stone Kanturk rider got his weekend off to a great start earlier this afternoon when he won the National Junior Time Trial Championships in the Co Tyrone town.

Greg Swinand, no stranger to national titles, has proven he is still one of the really strong men on both the elite men’s and veterans’ domestic scene by winning the National Veterans’ Time Trial Championships, run with the junior decider early this afternoon.

Dunbar has already taken the biggest prize on offer on the Irish junior cycling scene this year in the shape of the Junior Tour of Ireland and has been in blistering form the very beginning of the season back in February.

Today the first year junior took his first national title as an U18 rider, beating Mark Downey of Nicolas Roche Performance Team-Standard Life into second place. Sean Hahessey of Iverk Produce Carrick took the bronze medal and completed a very strong podium in the Omagh Wheelers promoted event.

For his part, big man Swinand has been veterans’ time trial and road champion in the past, and the popular Usher Irish Road Club rider made the trip North well worth his while in winning the vets' title today.

He beat off John Heverin (Clann Eireann) into the silver medal position, no mean achievement considering Heverin is one of the best testers in the country and only recently broke the national 50 mile time trial record; since lowered again by U23 rider Marcus Christie.

Last but by no means least, Chris Troy of Castlebar CC took the bronze medal in the veterans’ TT today; a 40km event for both vets and juniors.

Swinand was fastest on the day of the combined vets and junior field and also broke the course record. He adds his gold from today to the silver he won in the National Vets' Road Race Championships in June in Co Louth.

We’ll have today's times and results in full for you as soon as we get them. In the mean time, well done Eddie Dunbar and Greg Swinand on two great performances when it mattered most, in a national championships.
