Eddie Dunbar and his Team Ineos team mates rode a strong
race from the front at the Tour of Yorkshire but failed to take back all the
breakaway men.
While all of Team Ineos, except Chris Froome, rode to
bring back the escapees to set up Chris Lawless it was to no avail.
Four of the breakaway men were in sights in the finishing
straight after 182.5km in the train from Doncaster to Selby.
However, one of their number – 29-year-old Dutchman
Jesper Asselman of Roompot-Charles – sprinted clear and just about held off the
bunch to win.
He just about held off Filippo Fortin (Cofidis) and Jonas
van Genechten (Vital Concept-B&B Hotels).
The other three riders the stage winner was with as they
approached the finish were swamped by the head of the peloton and were not
placed.
They were: Kevin Vermaerke (Hagens Berman Axeon), Eater
weekend’s Rás Mumhan rider in Kerry Daniel Bigham (Ribble Pro), and Joseph Nally
(Great Britain).
In the end Team Ineos sprinter Lawless took 10th place,
with Dunbar finishing 55th in the 114-rider peloton.
Eddie Dunbar and Ian Stannard had pushed the pace late in
the day to try and recapture the breakaway.
The other Irish riders in the race also finished in the
bunch; Rory Townsend best of them in 21st place.
His Canyon dhb p/b Bloor Homes team mate Robbie McCarthy was 82nd and Chris McGlinchey, in his first race at this level for Vitus Pro Cycling, was 41st; a very solid showing.
