This overhead footage of the final 150-200 metres at La
Route d’Occitanie in France today shows just how strong Eddie Dunbar was.
The riders faced two passages of a 4km climb at 8.3 per
cent into Saint-Geniez-d’Olt-et-d’Aubrac at the end of today’s opening stage.
The finish line was at the top of the climb second time
around. Movistar took it up with about 20km to go and on both passages of the
climb the lead group continued to get smaller.
Last time up the hill an attack from Eddie Dunbar (Team
Ineos) was covered by Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) and Rigoberto Uran (EF
Education First).
However, they then slowed after a few hundred metres,
letting six of the select group back onto them.
The clip below shows that with about 200 metres to go
Uran attacked and Valverde covered him tight.
Just behind those two Team Ineos man Ivan Sosa was unable
to hold Valverde’s wheel.
Dunbar shot around his Colombian team mate and closed the
gap to Valverde and Uran.
Just as he was getting onto them, Valverde glanced back
and he attacked.
It meant Dunbar had to immediately go after him and yet
he still managed to hold onto the world champion as everyone else in the group
lost time.
Valverde ran out the winner with Dunbar in 2nd place. This
overhead clip really underlines how well Dunbar did to first go around Sosa,
then close down Valverde and hang onto him when he opened his sprint.
