“It was really good, I think we rode really well all day,
especially Nico. Nico did a really, really good job today. He kept us at the
front, me and Dan, all day and I think his experience really showed.
“I’m not sure where Dan finished but when I got dropped
he was up there, which was good to see,” he said of the peloton exploding on
the penultimate climb.
“I followed Remco (Evenepoel); it was about 80k to go and
sometimes that can be a good idea, sometimes it can be a bad idea. And today it
was a bad idea.
“But still, when you see a rider like that move, and you’re
on his wheel, it’s important you follow, just in case.”
When Evenepoel (Belgium) went he put in a strong dig, with Dunbar right in his wheel. They were soon joined by Vincenzo Nibali (Italy), making for a strong trio out front.
And though they gained a gap and formed a small breakaway
for a number of kilometres, they was a reaction from the thinned down peloton
and they were brought back.
“I felt good, but then obviously Remco had done that a
few times now and, I don’t know what happened behind, but it was clear to see
teams weren’t going to let him do something like that.
“So they closed the gap down quickly, but it was still a big effort. I felt good at the time and you never know what could have happened in a situation like that."
Dunbar added of the attack: "It didn't pay off but that’s one day racing, you normally only have one bullet and when you use it that’s it, game over. But yeah, I thought it was a great day for us and Dan finished in the top 20 today.
"It was a great day, and a good ride by all of us in the green jersey. It was a good race, a nice experience and another race ticked off the list..
Dunbar said while riding an Olympic Games amid the
Covid-19 pandemic, and also having been delayed by a year, involved additional “hassle”
it was a great experience.
“Today out on the roads it was actually a really nice
course. It was really safe, beautiful roads; probably one of the hardest
courses I’ve ever done. To be fair, it ended up really good and I’m happy I
came.”
