Eddie Dunbar (Jayco AlUla) was among the fallers in a crash near the front of the peloton just as the sprint was opening up at the conclusion of stage 5 of Tour de Pologne today. A number of riders just ahead of the Irishman hit the deck, leaving nowhere for Dunbar to go but up over the top of them.
He was catapulted to the ground quite hard but immediately seemed to be able to sit up on the tarmac, which is hopefully a good sign for continuing in the race and getting a general classification result.
The Irish cyclist, 7th overall at Giro d'Italia in May, got to his feet and back on his bike to finish the stage. He placed 61st at 2:28 but, because the incident occurred so close to the finish, he will not lose any time in the overall standings.
Immediately after the stage, Jayco AlUla said Dunbar "went down hard in a big crash inside the final kilometre as the sprint opened up" before adding he "sat up and looks to be OK". The team is likely to provide a further update when Dunbar has been checked by the medics.
The incident happened when a Soudal-QuickStep rider fell in an especially tightly-packed section towards the front of the field, with Dunbar - who was 5th overall starting out this morning - immediately behind.
Marijn van den Berg (EF Education-EasyPost) put in a fantastic burst of speed at the front to win the stage - by several lengths on an incline to the chequered flag - from yellow jersey Matej Mohorič (Bahrain-Victorious), with 2nd place overall João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) taking 3rd on the stage.
More to come.
