Sam Bennett has taken his first win of the 2024 season today, when the Decathlon-AG2R-La Mondiale Team rider was best in the bunch sprint that settled stage 2 of the Four Days of Dunkirk.
The Irishman, who is chasing a return to the Tour de France in July after a four-year absence, was 3rd on the opening stage yesterday and has now taken the race lead with four stages remaining in a race he is a contender to win overall.
Today on the 184.3km stage from Wimereux to Abbeville, Bennett timed his final kick to the line to perfection and managed to hold off those just behind him once he hit the front.
He got the verdict, quite comfortably in the end, from runner-up Paul Penhoët (Groupama-FDJ) and 3rd placed Sasha Weemaes (Bingoal WB), with Pascal Ackermann (UAE Team Emirates) in 4th.
Yesterday's stage winner, and yellow jersey, Milan Fretin (Cofidis) may have beaten Bennett in the kick to the line 24 hours earlier but he could only manage 16th today, losing the race lead on time bonuses to Bennett.
More to come.
