Fresh from his overall victory at the Kanturk Three Day, junior road and cyclocross international Liam O’Brien (Fermoy CC) has won the Sliabh Luachra Classic today in Knocknagree, Co Cork.
O’Brien was best in a sprint to the line from a six-man breakaway. He beat last weekend’s A3 Shay Elliott winner, Sam Bolger (Killarney CC) and Sam Moloney (Greenmount CA) to top the podium.
The others in that six-man winning move – and filling placings 4th to 6th – were David Shine (O’Leary Stone Kanturk), Mark Pinfield (Blarney CC) and Matteo Mannasero (Blarney CC).
The junior and A3 group were given a five-minute handicap, with the A1-A2 bunch wiping two minutes off that advantage on the first two of six laps. However, an eight-rider breakaway that had gone clear of the A3-Junior group on the first lap was clearly determined to make it all the way.
Over laps three and four, the A1-A2 group only managed to close the gap to those ahead by another minute, as the eight-rider breakaway was whittled down to just six.
Back in the A1-A2 group, an eight-man chasing group got clear and quickly began passing the remaining A3s and juniors still ahead of them. However, while they also began closing the gap to the six leaders, they were not able to catch them.
And though the six-man breakaway attacked each other on the final two laps, the gap between it and the chasers was never reduced below 30 seconds, meaning the breakaway survived to fight it out for victory.
