Katie George Dunlevy and Eve McCrystal have carved their names into sporting history by winning another gold at Tokyo 2020 this morning, this time in the Paralympic road race.
The Irish duo had already won the TT at these Games – as they
did five years ago in Rio – and claimed silver in the pursuit on the track last
week.
This morning’s gold medal brings their career Paralympic medal tally to five; three golds and two silvers. And that haul puts them among the greats in the history of Ireland’s Paralympic involvement.
Dunlevy and McCrystal prevailed in a tight finish this morning
after 2½ hours of racing in very wet conditions.
While the Swedes and British both put in very strong
performances, the Irish women overwhelmed them at the finish on the Fuji
International Speedway.
The Irish powered off the front of the three-bike lead group inside the final 1km to win from Swedish duo Louise Jannering and Anna Svaerdstroem and Britain’s Sophie Unwin and Jenny Holl.
More to come.
