Dunlevy-Kelly power to another world title, Timothy also impresses

Katie George Dunlevy and pilot Linda Kelly celebrate a second gold medal, this time in the road race, at the Worlds in Belgium

Not content with claiming the TT world crown, Ireland's Katie George Dunlevy, and pilot Linda Kelly, have also won road race gold at the UCI Paracycling World Road Championships in Belgium.

Though the day ended in glory, as has so often been the case for the tandem pairing at the Worlds and Paralympics, there were some very nervous moments along the way.

Dunlevy and Kelly suffered a mechanical out on the road that forced them to dismount, and though they got going again to recover from that interruption, they also had to endure a puncture.

However, they caught Polish pair of Patrycja Kuter and pilot Karolina Kolkowicz, passing them and beating them into the silver medal position, by 21 seconds, in the 77km road race in Ronse.

The Great Britain tandem - Sophie Unwin and her pilot Jenny Holl - who the Irish beat for TT gold at these Worlds, took road race bronze, at 2:40.

In the 92km men's B road race, also on Sunday, the Irish tandem duo of Damien Vereker and pilot Mitchell McLaughlin crashed and were non-finishers; a very disappointing outcome considering their 7th in the TT.

Ireland's Cormac O'Callaghan was 10th in the 61.6km men's C1 road race, after his 12th place in the TT. Richael Timothy was 5th in the road race - a fantastic result at this level - and was 10th in the TT.

"It was a really hard race, probably actually the hardest race we've had, and it was definitely just about not giving up, believing in yourself and just believing in each other," Dunlevy said of their road race victory.

"We had a lot thrown at us with the slow puncture, the wheel change, the chain getting stuck. A lot of people had mechanicals though, it was pretty treacherous with the cobbles and the wet roads.

"But honestly, to be three-time double-double World Champions is what we've been dreaming of and what we've been training for.

"We take confidence from the wins we've had of course but you never know what can happen on the day - you can never be complacent. Never complacent in training and never complacent in a race."

Kelly said she was delighted to once again take another gold at a major championship with Dunlevy.

"Myself and Katie are fighters, we never drop heads no matter what. We're here to race and make the most of it, so we kept the heads," she said.

"We hammered on, we never gave up. We got to the second hill, caught the Polish and time-trialed home."
