Eddie Dunbar (Team Jayco AlUla) has suffered a cruel blow on stage 2 of Giro d'Italia today, hitting the deck hard with just over 60km to go and them hemorrhaging time in the final on the Oropa.
Though Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) attacked with 5km to go to win the stage, though not by the margin many would have expected, Dunbar was in a very different fight back the road.
The Irishman, who rode a very solid opening stage yesterday, would have wanted to get in a group with the other general classification men and keep alive his hopes of a top five, even the final podium, over the three week race.
Instead, he simply fell further and further behind, no doubt not helped by the hard fall earlier in the stage, before finally finishing the stage in 51st at 5:56.
His compatriot Ryan Mullen (Bora-hansgrohe) was 146th at 24:34 and should be in contention to help team mate Danny van Poppel tomorrow if a sprint settles stage 3.
