Cathal Doyle (Carn Wheelers) may have gotten off to something of a slow start in the B Race at the ‘Fixx Coffeehouse Supercross Series’ in Dublin’s Tymon Park on Sunday, but he managed to get back on terms and steadily power his way to victory.

It was David O’Connor (Park Wheelers) who took the initiative early on, storming around the first of six laps in a blistering pace of 7:18.

He led by eight seconds at the end of that opening circuit from Barry Dace (Orwell Wheelers), with David McCann in third place a further two seconds back.

The eventual winner was only 8th after that first lap, but he then set about making his way through the traffic and once he had gotten into his stride he simply continued to pick off everyone ahead of him.,

He was fastest on the second and third laps and looked like a winner from that point on. However, it was on the fourth lap where he really showed his strength, maintaining a lap speed just below 7:40 as all of the other front runners slowed, some of them quite considerably.

By the finish, Doyle clocked a time of 45:48 and was 1:17 ahead of second-placed O’Connor. The contest for that second place was extremely close, with O’Connor just about shading it from Dace, who was clocked with an official time in third just one second back.

David McCann held on for fourth from what was a fast-finishing Keith O’Sullivan (Sorrento CC); a rider whose engine clearly took a while to warm up on a cold and pretty miserable day.

The success of the B Race concept was again underscored by a great turn out, with no fewer than 59 riders finishing the sold-out event.

The B races are designed to bring on riders who are perhaps new to the cyclocross discipline, are coming back to the sport or who may be using the off road events as a means to blow away some cobwebs during the road racing off season. That said, the fact that just 45 seconds covered those riders placed from 2nd to 6th places shows a competitive and healthy B scene is beginning to emerge.

Like the A Race on the day, the B event was run by Team WORC.
