Ethan Downey took a really strong win in the Derrymacash GP in Lurgan, Co Armagh, today winning solo by about half a minute.
The 17-year-old gave the promoting club, Clann Eireann CC, plenty to cheer for when he left the A3 group he started with and proceeded to reel in the A4 men who were given a couple of minutes of a handicap.
The eight-lap, 45-mile, contest attracted a strong field and with two of the laps remaining Downey sensed he would miss the boat if he didn’t act. So he jumped clear on the only hill on the circuit and went straight through the limit men.
He still had work to do when he went clear because he was on his own but he stayed calm and rode a solid tempo all the way to the line.
Edward Shannon of VC Mourne was next across the line with Cahill Kane (DCU CC) rounding out the podium.
