Alex Dowsett wins today's Giro d'Italia stage


Alex Dowsett has taken his first ever pro win in a road race on today's stage of the Giro, with a stray dog running out onto the finishing straight the only last minute nervous moment for the British rider.

Dowsett became the first rider from Israel Start-Up Nation to ever win a Grand Tour stage at the end of 200km of racing from Giovinazzo to Vieste today.

He won stage 8 solo after making the day's winning breakaway and attacking it just after 18km from the finish.

And though he had a late small climb to negotiate he had already used his TT ability to build a large gap on the chasers.

In the end he took a victory, and was delighted with it, 1:15 ahead of the other what remained of the breakaway, led in by Salvatore Puccio (Ineos Grenadiers) from Matthew Holmes (Lotto Soudal) and Joseph Rosskopf (CCC Team).

The peloton finished almost 14 minutes down and that meant no change in the general classification.

João Almeida (Deceuninck-QuickStep) retained the race lead going into a day in the mountains tomorrow ahead of the rest day.
