Corkery, O'Brien take Silver Pail GP 1-2, Fermoy
National criterium champion Dillon Corkery and team mate Paidi O’Brien have taken 1st and 2nd at the Silver Pail GP.
The Gerard Cycles-DHL duo finished side by side in Fermoy, Co Cork, this afternoon after having been in the breakaway for most of the race.
A group of 10 pulled clear early in the race and O’Brien would attack it on the last lap of ten.
With all the riders having been softened up by a testing race in hot conditions, O’Brien pulled out a significant gap.
And when his advantage reached about one minute, Corkery attacked from the breakaway. He rode across to the lone leader to make it two up front.
The team mates, a mix of youth and vast experience, then put their heads down until the finish, where Dillon Corkery won from O’Brien.
It was the latest in a growing list of successes for the team; Sean Moore also winning the Mullingar GP last weekend.
The squad has attracted some young talent for its first year. And it is clearly riding very well under the guidance of former An Post-Chainreaction rider O’Brien.
Also guiding the riders this year are Tim Cassidy, Derek Stenson and Liam Cullen. Dillon Corkery has already taken a series of wins in 2018, including the elite crit title.
Jennifer Bates, a relative late-comer to racing, has been called up to the Irish paracycling squad as a sighted pilot.
Furthermore, Moore's win last weekend came at the expense of Conor Hennebry; the Viner-Caremark-Pactimo rider who won Rás Mumhan this year.
It was a quality victory secured after Moore had been a constant in the results for a long time.
