Irish
U23 international rider Matthew Devins is set to get his 2022 season underway
tomorrow, Friday, in Belgium with his Trinity Racing Continental team. The
19-year-old is set to line out at Youngster Coast Challenge.
The 167.2km race from Bredene to Koksijde is mostly
flat but takes in some climbs around the midway point, including the Kemmelberg.
The U23 race will also feature fellow Irish rider Archie Ryan, who is riding for the Jumbo Visma Development Team but will soon be in action for the Dutch outfit’s World Tour squad.
Devins is part of the Trinity Racing this
year, his second season with Andrew McQuaid’s team, alongside U23 Irish TT
champion Kevin McCambridge, though he is not in action tomorrow.
Named in the Trinity Racing team for
tomorrow alongside Devins are British riders Ollie Rees and Sam Culverwell as
well as American Luke Lamperti, Belgian Siebe Roesems and Australian Blake
Quick.
The race starts by taking the riders
down the Belgian coast, where they should have crosswinds for a prolonged
period before hitting the mid section with climbing and then a flatter, though
full-gas, run for the finish.
Devins enjoyed a strong first season as
an U23 with Trinity Racing, getting 20 days of UCI-ranked racing, which was
solid considering how many U23 and smaller elite races were cancelled due to
the lingering impact of the pandemic.
He was also part of the Irish U23 team
for the European Road Championships in Trento, Italy, in September and should
figure again in national team selection in the year ahead.
