Meath Grand Prix: Dermot Trulock takes victory in the Navan Road Club promotion's main event from a three-man breakaway (All photos by Sean Rowe)
Dermot Trulock has won the Sean Nolan Meath Grand Prix
after riding an aggressive race and eventually pulling clear in a three-man
group.
At the end of four laps, for a total race distance of
150km, in the Navan Road Club promotion, Trulock won the sprint for victory
from a three-man group.
Luke Smith (Bio-DHL-FRS) was 2nd with man of the season Charlie Prendergast (Castlebar CC) being forced to settle for 3rd place this time around.
A breakaway of about 10 riders went clear shortly after
the start and that would prove to be the key move of the day in the A1-A2
event.
That group worked well on the opening lap to pull out a
gap but second time around the attacks began.
Eventual winner Trulock had a go on the climb to assess
the strength of the opposition, though that move failed to split the escape.
On the third lap Trulock tried again, attacking solo going through the finish area and this time get clear on his own.

Trulock put his head down and hit out for the chequered flag, though there was still a long way to go, and got a gap of about one minute.
However, the escape group he had ridden away from got
organised and combined well to bring him back.
Just as the last lap was starting, and having had a rest
after his earlier breakaway efforts, Lucan CRC’s Trulock attacked again.
This time he pulled clear once again, with Smith and
Prendergast soon going off in pursuit and riding across to him.
And that’s the way it stayed for the final lap; the trip
up front working away while being chase by the remains of the breakaway;
Trulock taking it at the finish from Smith and Prendergast.
Ben Walsh (GSC Blagnac VS31) then came through as best of
the rest to take 4th place from Jack Caldwell (Bio-DHL-FRS).
Then came Thomas Walsh (Comeragh Cycling Club) in 6th with Stephen Murphy (Black Rose Racing) in 7th and the winner’s team mate Cian May rounding out the top eight.

In the A3-Junior race a group of eight riders broken clear on the second lap of three; all of them juniors apart from U16 riders Adam Gilsenan (Bohermeen CC) Mark McGarry (Dungarvan CC).
With the Waterford man in the escape was Conor Coleman (Panduit Carrick Wheelers), Matthew Devins (Yeats Country), Bohermeen CC’s Aaron Rafferty, Daniel Yon Hin (O’Leary Stone Kanturk), Conor Farrell (Lakeside Wheelers) and Mark Smith (Ciclotel Travel fueled by YPB).
However, the
workload began to tell on McGarry and he lost his place in the group;
understandable considering his youth.
Coleman was also
dropped though, returning to racing following a prolonged absence, he did well
to make the breakaway.
That left six men up front and they stayed together until the finish to fight it out.
Devins took a strong win in the sprint from Yon Hin and Gilsenan; the latter putting in a great gallop on U16 gears for 3rd after making the breakaway and staying in it.
In the A4 race John McCormack (Castleknock CC) won the sprint from a reduced bunch.
Declan Fagan (Limerick CC) was 2nd and Ladislav Cimbala (Dublin Wheelers) placed 3rd.
