Deignan and Roche gather themselves for first key battleground of this year's Giro

On the double: Nacer Bouhanni comes home for his second stage win of this year's Giro, the sprints far more open now in the absence of Marcel Kittel who won stages 2 and 3 in Ireland last weekend.

After crashes in the closing stages yesterday turned the Giro d'Italia on its head and ended the general classification dreams of some of those hoping to be in the final shake-up, including Ireland's Nicolas Roche, a calmer environment prevailed today.

The French sprinter with Fdj.fr, Nacer Bouhanni won the day with a late surge in a bunch sprint into Foligno after the early breakaway built a lead over nine minutes only to be swept up inside the final 5km.

Bouhanni handled the very technical run-in better than the other sprints who can match him for speed. He adds the win to his victory on Tuesday's stage 4 after the riders had arrived back in Italy following the race's opening weekend in Ireland.

Roche (Tinkoff-Saxo) and Philip Deignan (Team Sky) finished in the main peloton today on the same time as the French man and will undoubtedly have been glad of a calmer day ahead of tomorrow's first big day in the mountains.

The 179km trek to Montecopiolo features a cat 2 climb and two cat 1 ascents, with the race finishing at the summit of the second cat 1.
