David McCann has gotten the first international podium result of his 2012 campaign, taking second on stage two of the Tour of Korea (2.2) and also moving into second on the general classification.

After finishing in the bunch yesterday on the short opening stage into Seoul, McCann today got clear in the winning three-man move on the 198km stage.

The Belfast man finished in second on the same time as stage winner Alexander Candelario, an American riding for Tem Optum-Kelly Benefits. Korean rider Jang Jae Chan (Terengganu) also finished in that leading three-men escape.

However, there was then a gap of 30 seconds back to the bunch sprint for fourth.

It means McCann is now well placed to make an assault on the GC in the week ahead before the race finishes next Sunday; now just four seconds off the GC lead of Candelario.

The Irishman is one second ahead of third place Chan on GC, with a gap of 30 seconds back to fourth and 40 seconds covering the top ten.

Martyn Irvine is making his road race return in Korea with McCann on their RTS Racing Team and, as he expected, has had a tough enough time today.

He finished in the bunch on yesterday’s 52km stage but on today’s much longer run, he suffered and lost more than 20 minutes.

It will take him some time to get his road legs back following his long track campaign that has secured for him a place in the omnium at the London Olympics.
