Tomas Knapcok of Clogher Valley Wheelers takes the final stage at the Tour of Omagh. But David Irvine of Caldwell Cycles ran out the overall winner.

David Irvine claims overall win at Tour of Omagh

David Irvine of Caldwell Cycles has taken overall victory at the Tour of Omagh. He took the initiative towards the end of the final stage and reaped the rewards.

Irvine finished in a 13-man leading group as yellow jersey Barry Rogers (Harps CC) lost time.

And that was enough to move the jersey off the shoulders of the holder going into stage 4, Rogers, and onto those of Irvine.

The final stage was won by Tomas Knapcok of Clogher Valley Wheelers after two hours of racing. He took the verdict in a sprint from a breakaway.

Jakub Tarnowski of Fixx Rouleurs was 2nd with Simon Woods of Keevan CC rounding out the podium on the stage.

Irvine was in 5th place but had done enough to claim the outright honours.

Rogers, who had won stage 1 and took 2nd on stage 3 was 27th in a group exactly one minute back. And that saw him drop from the race lead to 14th overall at 42 seconds.

Irvine set down the ground work for his overall victory by finishing safely in the bunch on stage 1 last Friday followed up by 2nd in the stage 2 TT on Saturday morning.

And he was also to the fore on Saturday afternoon’s stage 3, finishing in the 26-man lead group sprinting for victory.

That meant that going into Sunday’s final stage he was 2nd overall just four seconds behind Rogers.

And when Irvine got away from Rogers on the last stage, he was the best placed rider in the escape and so won overall.

Irvine was leading the climbers’ classification going into the last stage and he surged clear on his own on the final cat 1 climb at Gortin.

He went over the top of that climb some 40 seconds clear of a chase group. And though that group would ultimately catch him before the finish; when it did, race leader Rogers was not present.

However, while Rogers lost the race lead, he won the points classification.
