David Conroy overcomes mishap for Navan cyclocross win
Having enjoyed a very strong win in the UCI-ranked Belfast international race last weekend, David Conroy has taken another victory.
The Scott-EuroCycles rider was best in the Navan cyclocross race today, though he didn’t have it all his own way.
Indeed, a mechanical problem at the outset threatened to ruin his day at the Blackwater Park CX promoted by Navan Road Club.
Conroy had to come from the back of the field on the eight-lap race. And while he was fighting his way through the field, others were pressing at the head of the race.
Junior rider Sean Nolan of the promoting club and established ‘cross rider Paul O’Reilly of UCD-FitzCycles.com were giving good accounts of themselves.

Nolan had pressed hard early and at one point he had a lead of almost 20 seconds over O’Reilly.

However, by the fifth lap Conroy had closed in on the leaders, with himself, O’Reilly and Nolan coming together with three to go.
The form book said it would be Conroy who’d emerge for victory; and so it came to pass despite his early problems.
The U23 international rider pressed home his superiority on the last lap. He pulled clear to take what was a narrow win in the end; by just six seconds.
Just behind him it was O’Reilly whose experience shone through, he took 2nd place ahead of 17-year-old Nolan.
The Navan teenager finished 29 seconds back, with the final lap very much sorting the podium men.
The women's race was won by Niamh Stephens of TC racing. She claimed victory from Mary Dawson of Bray Wheelers by 47 seconds. Erica Grant of Epic MTB was 3rd, some 2:29 off the winner.
The early leader, Lucy O’Donnell of O’Leary’s Stone Kanturk endured a frustrating afternoon. She punctured after looking very strong in the early exchanges.
