After a testing contest during which the groups only came back together in the final 10km, two late attacks would dictate the outcome. When David Brody took flight with 3km to go it was all over (Photo with thanks to David Conway Photography)
David Brody Castlebar Cycling Club wins Holian Cup
Castlebar Cycling Club has taken a 1-2 result at the Holian Cup in Cross, Co Mayo. David Brody was first to the chequered flag to claim his opening win of the year.
And just a few seconds behind his in-form club mate Charlie Prendergast came home on his own for 2nd place.
Both riders had attacked late in the race after the field had come together in the handicapped event; run over five laps of a seven mile circuit.
The A1 scratch group would catch the A2 riders early in the contest. However, that enlarged group took quite some time to close up on the A3-A4 bunch.
The juncture was made in the last 10km, before the attacks that would win the race were fired off the front.
Brody forged clear with about 3km remaining. And when he got a gap he had the legs to hold it all the way to the line.
The main field finished right behind runner-up Prendergast, who attack with about 2km remaining.
The peloton was led home by Ainárs Maskaláns. He rounded out the podium on the night for promoting club Western Lakes CC.
